The Huron and Eastern Railway Co. (HESR) and its "sister" operation, the Saginaw Valley Railway Co. (SGVY) have served the "Thumb Area" of Michigan since 1986, when their first section of track was acquired from CSX Transportation. This first segment ran from Bad Axe to the end of the line, including the town of Croswell.
The HESR and SGVY now own or operate
approximately 255 miles of main line track in this region of the
state. Every year more than 12,000 car loads of freight are handled
by the customers of these two railroads. Products include corn, soy
beans, edible beans, wheat, fertilizer, auto parts, sugar products,
scrap steel, plastics, sand finished food products and lumber. They
interchange freight with CSX or, through a special agreement with
another Michigan Short Line ( the Central Michigan Railway), the
Canadian National Railway, which includes the Illinois Central and
the old Grand Trunk and Western. The HESR and SGVY are a part of RailAmerica's rail systems. RailAmerica now operates some 14 rail lines in the United States and Canada, rail operations in Chile and Australia, and a specialty trailer manufacturer in Texas and Canada. RailAmerica is a publicly held transportation company that is traded on the NASDAQ. |
